Thoracic Cancer Surgeries

Comprehensive Care For Thoracic Cancer

Thoracic cancer is characterized by the presence of malignant tumors in the organs, glands, or structures within the thoracic cavity, commonly affecting the lungs or esophagus. While lung cancer is the most prevalent form, esophageal cancer is also a significant concern. In most cases, lung cancer is not linked to inherited genetic mutations but rather develops due to acquired genetic changes over time. Lifestyle factors, particularly smoking, play a crucial role in increasing the risk of these mutations, leading to the uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells within the thoracic region. Early detection and timely intervention are essential for effective treatment.

Similar to other cancers, thoracic cancer develops when cells divide and grow abnormally giving way to tumors in the chest cavity. All cancers of the chest cavity fall under the category of thoracic cancer, including lung cancers, thymic cancers, and tracheal cancers. Among the different types of thoracic cancer, lung cancer is the most common.

Thoracic Cancer: Signs And Symptoms

The first signs and symptoms of thoracic cancer often do not appear until the disease has reached an advanced stage. However, in some cases, individuals may experience early warning signs that indicate the presence of the condition. These symptoms can vary based on the specific type of thoracic cancer and its location within the chest cavity. While some people may remain asymptomatic for an extended period, others might notice persistent health concerns that should not be ignored. Identifying these symptoms at an early stage is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment. Below are some of the potential indicators of thoracic cancer:

  • Coughing that does not improve
  • Hoarseness
  • Blood in phlegm or sputum that is expelled by coughing
  • Weakness
  • Wheezing
  • Infections that return or will not clear
  • Chest pain that gets worse with cough or laugh

As lung cancer advances, coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, and unintentional weight loss become more common symptoms. Bone pain, headaches, muscle weakness, and drooping eyelids may be signs and symptoms of cancer spreading further.

Early detection of thoracic cancer is uncommon, as symptoms often do not manifest until the disease has progressed. However, if you experience persistent signs such as unexplained weight loss, chronic cough, difficulty breathing, or chest pain, it is essential to seek medical attention immediately. Timely diagnosis can significantly improve treatment outcomes and overall prognosis. To ensure the best possible care, schedule a consultation with Dr. Dharma Kumar K.G. at the earliest opportunity. Our expertise and advanced medical approach will help determine the most effective treatment plan tailored to your condition.

Surgery Options

The patient’s health status, the type of tumor, and the extent of the tumor’s spread are all analyzed to determine what kind of treatment will work best for that individual. Some treatments can be used to control cancer. While others are used to reduce symptoms and/or improve quality of life. Check them out:

  1. Esophageal Cancer Surgeries: Esophagectomy is a surgical procedure for treating esophageal cancer. The two main methods of esophagectomy are:
    1. Transthoracic esophagectomy (TTE)- A surgeon removes the esophagal tumor from a large incision in the neck, chest, or abdomen through an open esophagectomy.
    2. Left thoracoabdominal (LTA) esophagectomy- This minimally invasive procedure involves making one or more small incisions on the body. To do the surgery, small instruments are inserted through other openings guided by a laparoscope (a thin, tube-like instrument with a light and a lens for viewing) inserted through an incision.
  2. Lung Cancer Surgeries: Lung cancer surgery is primarily performed using two common procedures: lobectomy and pneumonectomy. A lobectomy involves the surgical removal of the affected lobe of the lung, ensuring that the cancerous tissue is eliminated while preserving as much healthy lung function as possible. On the other hand, a pneumonectomy is a more extensive procedure in which an entire lung is removed due to severe damage or the presence of cancer. The choice between these surgeries depends on factors such as tumor location, size, and overall lung function, ensuring the best possible outcome for the patient.
  3. Mediastinal Tumour Resections: The mediastinum lies between the sternum and spine in the chest cavity. Mediastinal tumor resections remove abnormal tissue here. During surgery, the doctor makes one large or several small chest incisions, inserting tubes to drain malignant fluid and air.
  4. Chest Wall Tumour Resection And Reconstruction: This procedure treats chest wall tumors by removing a rib, extracting the tumor, and reconstructing the rib to maintain a natural appearance, similar to LTA.
  5. Tracheal Tumour Resections: In a tracheal tumor resection, the cancerous parts of the windpipe (trachea) are removed surgically. Tracheal resection can be performed via similar methods of treating esophageal lung cancer: open surgery (TTE), and minimal-invasive surgery (LTA).
  6. Diagnostic Thoracoscopies: A diagnostic thoracoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure. It provides access to the thoracic cavity without requiring surgery for evaluation of intrathoracic pathology.
