Gynaecological Cancer

Gynaecological cancer refers to a range of cancers affecting the female reproductive organs, such as the cervix, uterus, and ovaries. These cancers typically require treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. Catching them early and seeking timely medical care greatly improve outcomes, making awareness and regular screenings essential.

Gynaecological cancers occur when abnormal cells in the female reproductive organs, such as the cervix, uterus, or ovaries, begin to multiply uncontrollably. This rapid growth leads to the formation of tumors, which can invade nearby tissues and even spread to distant organs through the lymphatic system or bloodstream. The type of surgery needed to treat these cancers depends on various factors, including the cancer’s type, size, and stage. In some cases, minimally invasive procedures can effectively remove tumors, while more advanced stages might require extensive surgeries to eliminate cancerous tissues and prevent further spread. Early diagnosis plays a crucial role in determining the most effective surgical approach and improving the chances of successful treatment.

Dr. Dharma Kumar K.G, he’s a specialist in diagnosing and treating these cancers. He gives personalized care, just for each patient. With expertise in complex surgery, and a team approach, we make sure treatment is good, and the patient is doing well.

Our treatment places, they’re advanced. We can do radical hysterectomy with bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection (BPLND) for cervical cancer, open and laparoscopic total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) with BPLND for uterine cancer, and primary or interval cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for ovarian cancer.

Types of Gynaecological Cancer

They are grouped by the organ they affect, these cancers. The three common ones are:

  1. Cervical Cancer It starts in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus, connects to the vagina. Often, it’s from persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). Pap smears and HPV tests help find precancerous changes early, so it doesn’t get worse.
  2. Uterine Cancer (Endometrial Cancer) Also called endometrial cancer, it’s in the lining of the uterus. The most common type, and often with hormonal imbalances, obesity, and postmenopausal status. Abnormal vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain, they are early signs.
  3. Ovarian Cancer In the ovaries, which make eggs and hormones, it develops. Often, it’s found late, because the symptoms, they’re subtle. Like bloating, abdominal discomfort, changes in bowel habits. Surgery is the main treatment, with chemotherapy too.

Signs and Symptoms of Gynaecological Cancer

The symptoms change, depending on type and stage. Some common signs are:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding (after menopause or between periods)
  • Pelvic pain or pressure, it doesn’t go away
  • Weight loss, unexplained, without diet or activity changes
  • Bloating, or feeling full fast
  • Changes in pee or poop habits, like urgency or constipation
  • Pain during sex
  • Tiredness and weakness, all the time

If these symptoms keep going, see a specialist. Early help, it’s better for treatment and survival.

Surgery Options for Gynaecological Cancer

Surgery is often the first treatment. The type of surgery, it depends on cancer type and stage, and patient health. The main surgeries are:

  1. Radical Hysterectomy with BPLND for Cervical Cancer- Takes out the uterus, cervix, nearby tissues, part of the vagina, and pelvic lymph nodes. BPLND clears out cancerous lymph nodes, lowering the risk of cancer returning. Can be done through open surgery or minimally invasive methods, depending on how far the cancer has spread.
  2. Open and Laparoscopic TAH with BPLND for Uterine Cancer- Total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH), remove uterus and cervix. Open, big cut in abdomen. Laparoscopic, small cuts, camera help. BPLND, remove lymph nodes with cancer, less metastasis risk.
  3. Primary and Interval Cytoreductive Surgery with HIPEC for Ovarian Cancer- Cytoreductive surgery, remove as much tumor as possible. Primary, before chemo. Interval, after chemo cycles, reduces the tumor more. HIPEC, heated chemo in abdomen, kills leftover cancer cells, better survival.

Post-Surgical Recovery and Care

Recovery varies based on the type of surgery and overall health. Open surgery usually means a longer hospital stay, while laparoscopic surgery lets patients go home sooner. Pain medications are used to manage discomfort. A diet rich in vitamins and minerals supports healing, and light physical activity aids recovery and prevents blood clots. Regular follow-ups with imaging help monitor progress and detect any signs of recurrence early.
